Position Yourself As A Leader

Uncategorized Jul 07, 2020

One of the biggest drivers of success in any career is positioning yourself as a leader no matter what role or title you have.

Are there any influential leaders that you look up to? Think about how they became a leader and the skills they possess. You recognize them as influential leaders because of those skills, their mindset, and how they position themselves.

No matter your title, YOU too can show up as a leader. Without having any direct reports, you can be respected as a leader amongst your peers. Tapping into your personal strengths is something you can start doing NOW.

3 ways to help craft your skills and position yourself as a leader

Level of Influence

One way to position yourself as a leader is the level of influence you have on your peers. How you influence those around you is a huge indicator of someone is management potential. If people want to follow your lead and you’re influencing them by already stepping into the leadership role. By explaining the whys and how the team will get there and driving them to get there, you are positioning yourself as a leader. Show them what’s possible and motivate them to believe those possibilities are attainable and then take action to achieve them.

Leadership is more than getting people to do what you want, it’s inspiring them to do it.  It’s easy to tell someone what to do, it’s incredibly difficult to get them to do their best without influencing them through motivation and positive reinforcement. Influencing others is not just about getting them to take action but also helping them to feel a profound sense of accomplishment when goals are accomplished.

Deliver Consistent High Performance

Another way to position yourself as a leader is to deliver consistent high performance. You must deliver excellent results. Give your work everything you’ve got each and every day. Like creating a habit, perform your best day after day. Show yourself to be do-er, not just a talker. Right now is the time to show up as the leader you want to be.

Delivering consistent high performance includes anticipating challenges, managing and embracing change, and not allowing distractions to make you lose focus. Always seek to learn new skills to separate yourself from others and to sustain long term performance. But also focus on doing the basics extremely well. Simplicity and clarity are important when achieving consistent high performance.

Be Bold But Self-Aware

A third way to position yourself as a leader is to be bold but self-aware.

Work on having a high EQ (Emotional Intelligence). Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions, as well as recognize, understand, and influence the emotions of others.

Make sure you’re always increasing your self-awareness and social awareness. Be cognizant of what is going on around you and how you can impact things differently. Book smarts and technical savviness is something we can all possess, but technical experience is just the tip of the iceberg. EQ is everything underneath the ocean.

The takeaway

Unless you’re open to focusing and working on your leadership skills, then you’ll probably miss opportunities to grow. Be willing to face challenges and have the determination to strengthen your skills and leadership will most certainly be in your future.
